On April 22, 2021, the 51st Earth Day will be celebrated, the second one during the Covid-19 pandemics. This world event, promoted by the United Nations saw, last year, the active participation of 75,000 partners belonging to 193 countries.
This event has seen, in the previous 50 editions, a growing awareness of the need to safeguard the planet through a sustainable use of the natural resources.
The path toward this result has been, sometimes, controversial and not straightforward and had its most relevant steps in counteracting the adverse effects of climate changes in the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Climate Agreement (2015).
In this context, the Electrical Engineering plays a key role: producing energy in an increasingly efficient and rational way, optimizing the use of all sources, including the clean (“green”) ones such as water, sun, and wind, enabling sustainable electric mobility is not only a challenge but a progress that has never stopped.
Aware of the resilient role that the Electrical Engineer plays in the modern technological context, we join the reflections of the United Nations to make energy transition not just a financial maneuverings, but the beginning of the fifth industrial revolution.

In the past, Electrical Engineers, together with Mechanical Engineers, were called “Industrial Engineers” and were looked at as the Engineers capable of developing projects and run industrial systems that produced, distributed, and used electricity.
In the last decades, significant steps took place, related to the development of power electronics and computational systems with the consequent possibility of controlling the behavior of the electrical transmission and distribution networks, generators, and motors under different operating conditions.
Studies on new materials (superconductors, nanomaterials, photovoltaic cells, etc.) have also enabled manufacturing devices with unbelievable energy and functional performance.
The present energy transition, oriented toward the more intensive use of renewables, has more and more highlighted the importance of electric energy distribution, regardless of the way it is generated.
Studies for optimizing the exploitation of distributed generation, for example, have literally upturned the way electric transmission and distribution networks are operated, shifting from a one-way approach (from power generation to load) to a bi-directional approach that enables the optimal exploitation of every source, be it consumed locally or injected into the system.
The increased focus on reducing the environmental impact of transmission and distribution networks has led to the development of new facilities and a more intensive use of cable transmission lines, which raised new important issues to be studied and solved (for example, connections to islands).
The development of Electrical Engineering is endless and must integrate with the skills of other related disciplines, learned during university education and also after graduation, in order to properly respond to the ever evolving social needs.

RSE has published a report devoted to the methodology developed with the aim to define the current scenario of the electricity distribution system in Italy. This scenario will be used in future research of this project to determine the impact on distribution networks of the evolution of distributed generation and the electrification of end uses. At the same time, the possible alternatives for controlling distributed resources will be assessed also with the goal of determining the costs for the network development.

Today, Oct. 27th, 2020, prof. Stefano Ronchi, Delegate of the Rector for International Affairs signed, during a virtual ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Danang (Vietnam), to facilitate scientific and teaching cooperation between these two Institutions.
The University of Danang has in its Faculty some professors who were awarded of the PhD in electrical engineering at PoliMI. This agreement has the goal to foster the possibility of both student and faculty exchange, in both directions. Students in Electrical Engineering are therefore invited to consider this possibility to join in Vietnam those PoliMI Alumni and spend a semester or so in Vietnam.
